CHARACTER EDUCATION AND ADVISORY PROGRAMThe Kasson-Mantorville High School Advisory Program provides students with a supportive atmosphere throughout high school. Advisory was developed as a vehicle for creating a more personalized learning environment where all students are well known to one adult. KMHS’ Advisory Program ensures that every student has the opportunity to feel known, heard, and understood. Students gain key academic and social competencies that they will need to navigate the hurdles of high school and make a smooth transition to career or college. Students also make meaningful connections with other students and other adults.
To help create consistent and strong relationships, advisory groups stay intact the entire school year, and consist of no more than twenty students. One faculty member is assigned to each advisory. Advisors meet with their students for 25 minutes each day to either discuss a lesson/activity revolving around a character trait of the month, establish relationships among classmates and staff, be available for academic help, or keep students abreast of daily school information. The Kasson-Mantorville School District believes teaching character education helps to build a safe, happy, and healthy school community. Advisory helps to facilitate these beliefs as well as engage students in learning activities in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect.
